Let me try a few what ifs out..... What if .. APPLE were to use the 16 bit version of the 6502 as a companion processor to the 68020 ? What if .. They were to get ..hum.. maybe 1 meg in 64k chips on the mother board. (substitute 256k chip if handy) What if .. The Prodos and dos source were rewritten to allow for 16 bit addresses? What if the 68020 had the 'quick draw' roms available in this single machine. What would happen to all those MACs and IIe's out there if this package were available for about 3000 $$US? Now before you say I'm crazy or that this would be silly consider: APPLE uses the integrated WOZ machine to control both the IIc and the Mac. Whats so hard about swapping some romware electronically to controll two types of drives. (or for that matter two drive types under one system) Many companies already have 68000's attached to II,II+,IIe models. (Here I must admit that there are about 1000 of these out there max) So what do all you APPLE people think ?? George Wilkin AT&T Network Systems ihnp4!ihu1m!gpw *APPLE and MAC belong to Apple Computer Anything I have said here is in no way the position or opinion of AT&T (or anyone else :-) )

Woz told mis_Infoworld that he was working on such a project then retracted that statement the next week. (Sounds like some heavy arm twisting to protect Mac sales). Rumor has it that Western Design (???) who designed the 16-bit 6502 was working on a plug in card for the IIe video slot. This sounds like a good deal. I would prefer a 68000 plug in card with (here I go again :-) 16 sockets to hold either 64k or 256k ram chips (jumper selectable -- someone tell me if this is impossible). The 68000 should run at 8 Mhz or higher. -- Mike Eve Boeing Aerospace, Seattle ...uw-beaver!ssc-vax!ssc-bee!eve
