I have a Fourth Dimension disk drive on my Apple ][+. It READs just fine. (Well, actually the heads are getting a bit out of align, but that's a different story...) Anyway, I cannot WRITE to it at all. I've tried the following: unplugged the pairs of leads to what appears to be a LED and sensor on opposite sides of the write-protect notch. Then: a) left either-one/both "open" b) left one/both "wired" (i.e., I put a short wire from one pin in the connector back into the other pin.) c) shorted the "write-protect" pin (#19???) on the connector to the disk controller to +5. d) various combinatons of the above. Whew. At least I didn't destroy anything! The result is consistent in both drives 1 and 2. ... no luck. Meanwhile my Apple-brand disk keeps on humming, four years later. Questions: Why didn't at least one of the above work? What CAN I do to be able to write on it? (and at the same time still be able to control w-protect, if possible, even if via external, manual switch!) And on my other problem, what luck have people had in adjusting disk drives? Is it a procedure that a software-type (i.e., 8-of-10-thumbs around a soldering iron) can handle? How long does it take? I have A.P.P.L.E.'s disk-analyzer, which has zillions of warnings and caveats. Are they over-doing it or what? If I go to a store, how much is it likely to cost? Thanks, world. John Burgess -- John Burgess ATT-IS Labs, So.
