Hi everyone...Listen, I just got through looking at the latest issue of Incider, and First Class Peripherals has dropped the price of the 10 megabyte hard drive "Sider" to $595!!! This makes it only $96 more expensive than the new Unidisk 3.5! Here's your choice: an 800k drive for $499, or a 10 meg drive for $595....

Unless I'm completely mistaken, The Sider is a piece of junk. I read lot's of letters on an Info-Apple net (don't remember the name...), and all of it was VERY negative. There were many complaints of the drive crashing minutes after it was installed, making funny sounds (grinding) and other nasty stuff. Although the product is advertised as a well-made product, how can one trust a hard drive for only $595? Note that these comments are NOT those of Erik, he simply allowed me to type on his time. Any comments about this should be sent to DCW%MIT-OZ@MIT-MC.ARPA

Before buying my Sider I had read 3 positive reviews in the magazines, and posted an inquiry to the net. Responses to this were also positive. I've now owned my Sider about 3 months, and its performance has been flawless and as advertised. I might add that my system sits on a rather rickety metal table which is easy to bump and shake with one's knees. Despite this, I have never had even a transient failure of the drive, much less a head crash. Incidentally, when I first formatted it, the formatter reported *no* areas as bad, and needing to be locked out. How many of you with hard drives can make that claim? I have no connection with First Class Peripherals other than being a satisfied owner of a Sider drive. - From the Crow's Nest - Kenn Barry NASA-Ames Research Center Moffett Field, CA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ELECTRIC AVENUE: {ihnp4,vortex,dual,nsc,hao,hplabs}!ames!barry

I don't have access to info-apple but I have yet to hear anything bad about the Sider. There is a bulletin board in Albquerque(sp) that has a Sider and the only trouble they have is with 1200 baud modem that they have been trying to install. Anybody have a sider that wants to clarify this? I want more storage but would like to avoid 3 inch disks. Are siders reliable? -- Well it's true, Just take a look. A cover sometimes makes the book. Hello, Ok, there have been some problems with The Sider Hard drive, however, there have been about 15 reviews, and all of the Reviewers loved it...(Incider, Creative Computer, etc)...It is true there are problems, but it does have a warranty, and if you find anything wrong with it, it's best to send it back and get a new one while you're under warranty, thus, if you keep it up, you should eventually get a great one...

I was an associate sysop on a BBS in Davis for the summer (Aves: (916) 758-2314) and we used a Sider with good success. Seemed very reliable except for one crash; another Sider user advised us to stick to smaller volumes (140K). Apparently he had been using large sizes (400K) and encountered MANY crashes.d As soon as he cut down the volume size the problems disappeared. We haven't had any problems since then either. Considering dealer cost for just a 10M hard drive is ~$200-250, the $595 price isn't outrageous. We got the Sider through mail order also, but I don't know the company. Hope this helps somewhat...
