[net.micro.apple] the new 16-bit apple II

kamath@reed.UUCP (Sean Kamath) (05/21/86)

I was just reading the May 19th issue of InfoWorld and in Dvorak's column
"Inside Track" he talks about the new Apple ][. He calls it a ][GS and
says this:

The best discription of the new 16-bit Apple II is that it will be
a Macintosh clone before all is said and done. It's dubbed the Apple
IIGS. The GS stands for graphics and sound. I think it should be
have been named the GSX for graphics, sound, and extensibility or
something. GSX sounds better.
Anyway, the new machine, which will be packaged in an Apple IIe
case, will be powered by the 65816 chip. It has a new sound chip to
deliver Maclike sound. It comes with 256K of memory, expandable to a
megabyte, 128K or read-only memory, and 16 or more colors at once in
normal resolution and four colors in 600-by-200 high resolution.
There is a Macintoshlike interface that I'm told is everything the
Mac is and more! Moore is spelled C-O-L-O-R. We'll see.

well.

Where did this guy hear about all this. It seems like it's due out in
early '87. What really beeps me about this, if true, is the constant
comparison to the Mac. I mean, I work with Macs EVERY DAY! I'm typing
on a Mac right now. They're just not as good as a //e. (I couldn't care
less what anyone has to say about that. 8-bit ancient architecture and
all, it's still years ahead of the Mac.) I have great fears that Apple
will try to force on us happy hackers such abominations as having to
boot in order to use the damn thing, removing teh cassette interface,
and, great will be my sorrow, these friggin horses ass windows! Sure< I
like a mouse once in a while, usually for graphics, now and then for
selecting blocks in word processing, but I HATE MENU BARS!!!! yuk yuk
yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk...

ANYWAY!

Has anyone heard more about this???? Hmmmmm. I wanna try one out when
they show up.

if anyone has the increadible urge to refute the //e's clear
superiority, please post to the appropriate news group! Better yet,
e-mail me.

Discaimer: Yeah, reprinted without permission, but how could I convey
the essence of what is going on without distorting it beyond
comprehension without quoting him? I know nothin' and I don't work for
anyone (yet.)

cut me some slack, my cat went to NJ for the next three months. I'm
lonely.
