[net.micro.apple] Commercial graphics software packages query.

archer@hsi.UUCP (Rehcra Yrrag) (06/12/86)

I have been writing a soccer game in Applesoft BASIC on my 128k Apple IIc
when I have the time. Without going into specific details, the game keeps
track of teams in a World Cup tournament. I was hoping to finish it in time
for the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico, but it looks like its going to have
to wait for the next Finals in 1990! Anyway, the game keeps track of databases,
scores and which teams qualify for the next round.

The game depends on random numbers very heavily. The user simply watches
and waits to see how the teams match up and who will eventually win the
World Cup. This is interesting, but my plan all along has been to have
user interaction, having the user play the computer, or two users play each
other. This would be done with GRAPHICS of course... and SOUND to make it
all the more interesting. We're also talking joysticks! The game has
excellent data management but as yet no action.

FINALLY MY QUESTIONS (phew!)

This is the first game with graphics that I have yet designed.
I could write my own machine language routines, but hey, I want this game
finished before 1990, you understand, of course! I was wondering if anyone
could recommend a graphics software package to help me out. All I want is
for my Applesoft BASIC game to call up a graphics routine (to play a game)
and return the final score back to my game. I wondered if Penguin Software's
"The Graphics Magician" (double hi-res version) might meet my needs.

Has anyone reading this ever used this software for similar purposes and would
you recommend it? Could you describe how you use "The Graphics Magician" this
way? Also, are there any other graphics packages that are as good if not
better? An advertisement in my July issue of InCider magazine shows "GameMaker"
from Activision. It looks like a new software package, the ad impressed me.
Has anyone seen or heard of "GameMaker" or had any experience with "GameMaker"?

Thanks in advance for all helpful responses.
