Well, The Apple ][ GS books have begun hitting the shelves. The first one I
have seen is called "The Apple ][ GS Toolbox Revealed" by Bantam Publishing.
It is geared toward beginners but does talk about the built in subroutines
in the Toolbox. Price: $21.95. There is another book by the same publisher to
be released called " The Apple ][ GS Book". No price yet.

Not specifically on the IIGS but interesting anyway is a book entitled
something like "The 6502, 65C02, and 65C816" by David Eyes, published by Brady.
I read some of the chapters while the book was being written, and it is
very enlightening. It made understanding these chips easy. There is lots
of sample code, which should provide a good leg up on programming the '816.

David had access to many if not all of the pre-production revs of the '816,
and he now works at Apple, and has hacked Apple IIs since they first came out.
He is also a very good writer, and helped write the outline for my book on
Macintosh programming. I can confidently say it would have a weaker book
without his help.

I haven't seen ANY 65816 books in the stores on the east coast yet, but there
are ads for it in many computer magazines. Rats! I can't find my APDA catalog,
but it would be a good bet that you would find it in there, too.

The title is closer to "Programming the 65816". If you already know
assembly language, the book is a very good introduction to the
chip and its heritage.

David is in charge of the tools group (responsible for APW, etc.) at
Apple, I believe.

I've found plenty here in San Diego. They should ooze out to all
corners of the continent pretty quickly.
