Eugene Fiume asked recently about depressing music, and it's not the first time the subject has come up in this news group, so I figured I'd put in my two cents worth. The Cure is one of my favourite groups and they love to sing about things like death, depression and mutilation, and unlike some other groups with depressing lyrics (Tears For Fears, for example), their music is just as depressing as their lyrics and they go together well to create a very depressing mood. This is especially true of my favourite Cure album, "Faith". "The Top" and "Japanese Whispers" are other Cure albums that have appeared in my top 10 for their years. A completely different kind of depressing music comes from Soft Cell. They depress by the way they sing about real-life situations that you may think are not too bad, but their lyrics always show the bad side. My favourite Soft Cell album is "The Art Of Falling Apart", and "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" is also pretty good. "Soul Mining" by The The is an excellent depressing album that falls lyrically somewhere between The Cure and Soft Cell. It's nice to see some more record reviews on the net. I'm not interested in reviews of records by groups I've never heard of and never will hear of unless I go to their home state, but it's very useful to hear about groups like those above and the ones Eugene mentioned that are widely available but not very widely played. -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsrgv!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff
