Concerning Phil Ngais' article on the arrest of Ginny Foat, and specifically the comment that; "Her friends - among them prominent women's leaders such as former White House adviser Midge Costanza - have rallied round her, raising funds for her defense and accusing police of singling her out because of her politics and visibility." Well, Heck!!! Of course she has been singled out because of her position in N.O.W. - - that is the main danger that visible leaders of 'the opposition' face (consider Walensa in Polska...or John Lennon in NY ( <- different, since the opposition was a crazed man, but the point is the same; if you are not in the public eye, you have less chance of that happening)) As far as if Foat is guilty or not, who can say....and if she is a counter-cry of 'police unfairness' shouldn't get her off of the charges. I suppose that it is in a way similar to the current realization of the violation of rights with the Strip Searching that many 'law enforcement agencies' ( not to mention a couple of schools here in Calif) perform on (mostly) females. I hope this makes sense..The important thing to remember is that ANY group that becomes visible will change, and the public attitude towards them will change too. -- Dave Taylor sdcsvax!taylor @ U.C.S.D.
