I really don't thinks this belongs in this news group, but this is where the discussions about abortion are going on. I have always wondered why when so many people are arguing pro and con about abortion, that no one ever changes their opinion. I think that is because no one is arguing about the "real" issue. And by avoiding this real issue, the causes for peoples beliefs are not being addressed. The real issue behind abortion is SEX. Generally, people that are against abortion are against recreational sex. Some people think that the only purpose for sex is procreation and that recreational sex is immoral. To these people, pregnancy and venereal diseases are just punishment for such immoral behavior. Anything that reduces such punishment, like abortion, encourages immoral behavior. Other people think that recreational sex is just fine. These people see pregnancy as an inconvenience occasionally associated with pursing that pleasure. Abortion is therefore a perfectly reasonable response, like going on a diet after too much holiday eating. I have thought about this quite a bit and it seems to make sense to me. While there are some people that don't seem to fit this mold, at second look they often do. For example, the recent arrest of the anti-abortionist who was fornicating in the back of a parked car with a man who was not her husband. While you might expect this person to think recreational sex is OK, I bet not. The world is full of people who intentional do things that they feel are morally wrong. On the other side of the coin, I imagine there are plenty of people who say they are against recreational sex who are actually just shy or self conscious and would be all for recreational sex if they could get over their shyness (or whatever). In reply to Walt Barnes' comment where he said, "Abortion is therefore a perfectly reasonable response, like going on a diet after too much holiday eating." Congratulations Walt, you have caught me speechless. All I can say is that I deeply hope this is not becoming the prevalent view. What are your fundamental principals? That is not a rhetorical question. Mike Laman sdcsvax!laman

Enough! No one is likely to change their position on the abortion issue based on an article on the net, so all further discussion seems pointless. Why argue with someone who's not going to change their position anyway? It's a waste of time (computer time, communications time, and most important of all MY time). I don't want to plough through screen after screen of abortion debates; if people really want to continue standing on their soap boxes and preaching to the masses, set up net.abortion so I can ignore it. Sorry for the flames, but I'm interested in reading about *other* issues affecting women. I'm also eager to hear from more women; most of the people posting are male, and I question how much we can learn about women's issues by talking to other men. --Bernie Roehl ...decvax!utzoo!watmath!watarts!bernie P.S. That doesn't mean we males shouldn't contribute to this group, just that more women should.
