I'm interested in knowing how many women have kept their maiden name after marriage. In my case, it wasn't practical to hyphenate and both of us wanted to keep our names (read: heritage and identity) intact. But there are occasional problems - for instance, loan applications. If we have kids, I think they would probably take *his* name - it's too big of a hassle otherwise. Once, as a joke, I told a salesman who asked about our name differences that "my husband kept his maiden name." The salesman, still hoping to make a sale, I think, seemed confused but said he *had* heard of 1 or 2 men that did that. Nancy Peate

I would have mailed this, but the evil spectre of harpo appeared in the return path. About women who kept their maiden names upon marriage: Two friends of mine here at MIT got married over Christmas break, and they are now officially Mr. James Shearer and Mrs. Lori Bechtold. They are both graduating this next term. As an additional bit of interest, Jim's mother is a doctor (MD style), and also kept her maiden name (and is quite vehement about throwing away mail not addressed to Dr. * * (sorry, I don't remember her name)).
