I just tend to use "he" and "she" at random.  "She" gets more precedence
where it sounds out of place (to make it sound more in place there in
future).

Sometimes male gays refer to each other as "she", as in "She thinks she's so
cute...".  This used to sound strange to me, now it just denotes a slight
comment on the topic being discussed.  (I'm not sure what the comment is.)

Personally I wouldn't object to having two words ("he" and "she") that mean
the same thing, with minor nuances.  What they meant in 1950 is largely
irrelevant; what they mean in 1990 is something our usage will control.
