I was sitting around yesterday listing to KPLZ, and the announcer killed some time by reading the results of a poll taken of couples. The question was something like "What's your chief complaint about your spouse?" The top two for each sex: Men: 1) She nags too much 2) She's not affectionate enough Women: 1) He's selfish and inconsiderate 2) He's not successful enough in business Comments? I'll start the ball rolling: One thing I notice is that each sex's complaints might be directed at the cultural image of the other's supposed strengths. For example, women are "supposed" to be emotional, supportive, affectionate. When the expectations built up in men by society aren't met, they complain Similarly, the classic image of men is a provider. When he doesn't provide or can't, women are disappointed.
