STATE STRENGHTHENS BAN
ON NUDE SUNBATHING

ALBANY, June 3 - New York is
banning nude sunbathing at beaches
and other public places.
Sunning without a bathing suit is
already illegal, if somtimes tolerated,
in most jurisdictions and banned
under state parks regulations. But the
overall state law only barred topless
women. Governor Cuomo said, "It is
currently permissible for either a
man or woman to appear bottomless
in public," referring to the law that
has been in effect.
Under a law signed by Governor
Cuomo today, it will be a violation
punishable by up to 15 days in jail or a
$250 fine to appear nude in public
places.
The sponsors of the measure said it
was intended to force Federal officials,
who under Federal park rules are
empowered to enforce state laws,
to ban nudity from two sections of Riis
Beach in southern Queens. The beach,
part of the Gateway National Recreation
Area, has been a refuge of those
who would go clothesless.
