[net.women] gender specific signs in NY city

abhay@bunker.UUCP (Abhay K. Jain) (08/15/83)

Recently I drove to NY city and noticed the following
sign on the road surface about 100 feet before the toll booths
on the bridges.(These signs are recent).
		LANE MANNED
This is apparently to warn people who drive looking down
on the tar surface, that the lane is attended by a 'man'. To my
surprise I found the toll collector to be a female.
I am no supporter of era but was sure offended by these
chauvinistic signs.

This summer around the U. of Ill. has been tree pruning time. Trees
being worked are surrounded by large signs saying "MEN WORKING IN
TREES." Unfortunately, these signs appear to be correct, since I
have seen quite a few men up in the trees, but the only women around
were on the ground picking up sticks/branches and putting them in
the back of the truck. I don't know whether or not women were
offered the option of going up in the trees, but if they weren't
they should have been. I would imagine such hazardous work brings
in bonus pay and such, and women have often been excluded from
this sort of dangerous, higher-paying job.

Whoever wrote the note on stress cycles in men and women, do you
know if any research on this has been done?
