[net.women] MANufacturing misunderstanding

ntt@dciem.UUCP (Mark Brader) (08/23/83)

Since Mr. Shattan seems to have missed the original item, perhaps a repost
is worthwhile. At a certain large company, a program was run to convert
sexist language to non-sexist. *The program* changed "manufacturing" to
"personufacturing". As for "individualufacturing", that was a purely
jocular item (and so marked: ":-)") based on the other one.

WHO? There is no Mr. Shattan. I'm not married, and even if I were,
I wouldn't insist that my husband take my last name. GRRRRRR!

Also, I was responding to a pet peeve (why should I be any different?).
The fact that the program made an incorrect translation shows lack of knowledge
on the programmer's part. I've seen the term "personufacturing" many times,
often used by people tring to be cutsey about the gender-in-language issue.
I was responding to the use of this term that I've seen on the net.

O.K.?
