The following riddle (and people's reactions to being asked
it for the first time) may be instructive.
A father and son were traveling by car. They get run over by
a train. An ambulance takes the pair to a hospital. The
father is dead on arrival. His son is seriously injured and
needs immediate surgery. A surgeon is called for. On
entering the operating room, the surgeon blanches and
exclaims, "I can't operate on this boy; he's my son". How
can this be?

I think the presence of the riddle in net.women makes the answer to the riddle quite obvious: the surgeon is the boy's mother. -- Jeff Sargent
