[net.women] Laura's mail

jeffw@tekecs.UUCP (Jeff Winslow) (08/29/83)

Judging from the (shall we say) strange letter which Laura got, I would
say that there are now USENET sites in mental institutions. Not that this
unnamed woman's feelings are not understandable, but her total inability to
apply her own apparent standards to herself and her percieved peer group are
indicators that something is seriously wrong with her.

As for her thinking Laura is male, it's just another example of "if the
facts don't fit your theory, change the facts". I believe there are some
people around who actually see no problem with that statement.

If you think that my news article was rather hostile (yes, folks, I got
mail that said that I shouldn't be so hostile) then be thankful that you
didn't receive the mail I sent personally to the account which I also
cc'd to the root on that machine.

Well, I got a response from the root of that machine. (No name, but it
came from that account). It went on at great length about a project that
had just been finished in the nick of time, and a drunken office party.
I get the impression that that whole office is terrified that I might
send a copy of the original letter to management, who I infer is not
wonderfully supportive of the idea of parties in the office, let alone
somebody's feminist views.

Well you are safe, because we ran out of space on this machine
and I deleted all my mail except for the few items which I knew were
worth saving, and while that mail message was rather startling it was
not worth keeping in my opinion.

I honestly do not know whether I ought to be pleased that this mail came
out as a result of an office drunk. (If it did -- as I recall there were
no spelling mistakes though several grammar errors). I have been rather
drunk myself, after all. I can remember one occasion when I went down
to the waterfront with 2 friends and drank 2 large bottles of champagne,
and proceeded to throw rocks into the lake while making suitable comments
about the ancestry of the designers of the RL02 -- BUT I cannot really see
myself sending mail to a stranger accusing them to be a "sexual deviant
and liar".

Is this what other people do when drunk?

Would whoever sent Laura the "put males where they belong" letter
speak up? Was it legit? Was it a joke?
>From Laura's paraphasing, I have a hard time thinking it was legit.
It sounds more like a feminist-hater spitting sarcasm than a feminist.
