How are stretch marks formed? Are they formed from gaining weight, or losing weight, or a combination of both?

Stretchmarks are places in the flesh which have been stretched beyond the limits of skin and flesh. They appear as a subcutaneous tear. During the later stages of pregnancy, most women's skin stretches beyond that point. After childbirth, the stretchmarks may be quite dark or nearly translucent. As time goes on, *most* women's stretchmarks fade, but they never go away. My experience is that, although the tummy may return to its original size, the skin is permanently stretched ...and the stretchmarks remain a happy reminder of the little one you've carried. Skin is pretty elastic and stretch marks occur when it has been streched beyond the point of no return...think of how a balloon loses its elasticity when you blow it up... apparently it is a form of scarring. Rapid weight gain and loss can cause them as well as pregnancy and rapid growth spurts. Leslie

I would imagine they arose (as the name indicated) from stretching of the skin. (I know I've had stretch marks on my knees from practising the broad-jump in high school athletics). Saumya Debray SUNY at Stony Brook

one way is to have an "it" as has been mentioned. I have 2 "its" and love both.
