In response to the posting about this speaker: A few years ago while doing graduate EE work at Stanford, I heard Dr. Landes speak. He is indeed animated and outspoken. He gives many interesting anecdotes about his care & treatment of the unhappy engineer. Interestingly enough, all of his anecdotes are about men. Landes gave a profile of his typical client, fitting the basic sterotype for an engineer/programmer (more comfortable with code/circuits than people, had either a VERY dominating father or an absent father, spends little time communating with mate/children, has difficulty in the transitions between work and home). After the talk, I spoke with a few of my female colleagues who felt that the profile did not fit them AT ALL. HOWEVER, the men in the audience sat there shaking their head in affirmation! For those who will not be in Beaverton-- one of Dr. Landes' points is that engineers/programmers often do not develop the interpersonal skills necessary to build the kind of support structure that nearly everyone needs. His practice blossomed during the lay-offs of 1974 when engineers suffered severe depressions, unable to motivate themselves to even try to find work. When I heard Dr. Landes speak, his practice was in All-American City, Sunnyvale CA. From what I know, he's not the greatest therapist, but he is an interesting analyst! Patricia Collins hplabs
