[net.women] Work force statistics

billp@bronze.UUCP (Bill Pfeifer) (10/14/83)

The following numbers are from a study by Janet Norwood,
US Commissioner of Labor Statistics:

Percentage of women of working age in the labor force:

              | 1970 | 1982 | % Change
--------------|------|------|---------
United States | 43.3 | 52.1 | 8.8
--------------|------|------|---------
France | 40.1 | 43.1 | 3.0
--------------|------|------|---------
West Germany | 38.4 | 38.6 | 0.2
--------------|------|------|---------
Great Britain | 42.0 | 48.1 | 6.1
--------------|------|------|---------
Italy | 26.2 | 30.1 | 3.9

Incidentally, these increases in the US were not at the expense of men's
jobs. Total jobs increased from 79 Million in 1970 to 100 Million in 1982,
an increase of about 27%, at an average of about 135,000 per month
(last month, September 1983, the increase was 400,000).
In the four European countries in the above table the number in the same time
period stayed fixed at 89 Million.
