[net.women] Beth Kevles"s survey

shebs@utah-cs.UUCP (Stanley Shebs) (10/23/83)

Andy wrote a very clear and perceptive article, with which I totally
agree, and I just have a couple little things to add:

It's definitely an uncomfortable truth, but the distinction between
the hard stuff - OS, networks, editors, languages, general hacking,
and the "high level sissy" stuff like user interface, administration,
etc, also seems to be a distinction between men and women in computing.
I don't like it. It's a shame to have to be rude to a woman because
she disdains hard-core hacking for the dubious pleasure of licking
mgmt's boots. I personally promote programming as the prime (if not
the sole) activity for a CS person, as when someone is asking me about
what kinds of CS jobs there are.

Andy's also right about the "capitalist pigs" learning Pascal (love the
phraseology!). I think of it as Justice in action, and adequate
recompense for the years of abuse ("programming is antisocial behavior",
"working with computers is for nerds only"). There's nothing quite
like an arrogant mgr who reluctantly comes to humbly ask for advice -
it's almost better than programming itself!
