[net.women] Using the Net to Help Find Missing Kids

lute@abnjh.UUCP (J. Collymore) (10/13/83)

I was watching a program the other night on TV,	relating to
missing children. It	occurred to me that possibly the net
could be a very useful tool in helping	distributing
information on missing children (17 or under). Since our
user community extends throughout the U.S. and Canada, we
	might really be	a help.

I thought that some strategy could be worked out with the
"Child Find" organization. My basic idea, however, was	that
we could create	a new newsgroup: net.lostchild. We would
then contact the "Child Find"	organization and ask them to
send a list of	missing children since June	1983, to a
designated volunteer from the	net. (I picked	June so	that
we wouldn't be too over-burdened in the beginning). Our
volunteer would be responsible for	posting	each childs'
physical description, residence, place	last seen and the
parental or police contact. Interested Readers on the net
could then check this newsgroup	and be on the	lookout for
these children. Where appropriate, postings might even be
printed	out and	taken by individuals to	their local police.

The purpose of this whole idea is to increase the chances of
finding missing children. I admit that this basic plan is
sketchy	and it needs a lot more thought and investigation
before	being acted on. I, therefore,	am asking all of you
reading	this to	give me	all of your opinions pro, con, legal
and otherwise. If we can formulate a good, workable
strategy, I will post it to the	net for	a review.

I think this is a great idea! I would like to volunteer for this service.
Those kids need all the help that they can get, if my assistance can help
bring one of then home than it's worth my trouble.
