While we're on the subject...

Stewart Brand, in one of the Whole Earth Catalogs*, suggests that,
if a rape victim wants to revenge through the legal system, it
might be better strategy to charge a rapist with indecent exposure,
instead of rape, because 1) it is far easier to get a conviction,
2) indecent exposure is much more widely viewed as evil, depraved
behavior than rape is, and 3) (in California) he will be listed
as an official sex offender for the same amount of time, and
will have the same social problems (getting a job, etc.) as
a convicted rapist.  He won't be in jail nearly as long, but
the odds of getting him in are much higher.
