Well, if you want to get really picky, the gender of the word 'princess' is FEMININE, not FEMALE. 'Female' is a biological term. So much for irrelevant pedantry. As for using the word 'gender' to refer to a person, I assumed that the purpose was to avoid a rather obvious pun, which would distract from the writer's point.
