This rather silly suggestion to create net.men (or its logical equivalent) reminds me of a confrontation during my early years at the University of Wisconsin (back when "Go Big Red" had an altogether different meaning). Some of us feminists were trying to get the administration to sanction a women's studies course. The bureaucratic response was, "Well, if we do that, we'd have to allow men's studies, too." At which point a very wise woman shouted, "You already have it. In fact you have a whole department. You call it 'history'." Jesus H Christ! We men strut our stuff, some would say throw it, over the whole world, including 99% of the net. Since when have we been lacking for a forum? And what would we use another one for? The usual, I suppose: beating each other up (metaphorically, of course). We do it so well. -- *** *** JE MAINTIENDRAI ***** ***** ****** ****** 17 Jan 84 [28 Nivose An CXCII] ken perlow ***** ***** (312)979-7261 ** ** ** ** ..ihnp4!ihuxq!ken *** ***

And what would we use another one for? The usual, I suppose: beating each other up (metaphorically, of course). We do it so well. Women's changing role in society requires that men change. While we are a male-dominated culture, I think that specific issues of maleness in our society go undiscussed, or (in this case) now dominate net.women! The flood of articles about men and their penises in net.women is the clearest sign of this problem. The fact is, men really DON'T talk about themselves or their roles much -- THEY DON'T QUESTION THEM! That is one of the reasons net.women exists. I think it is time men did start talking among themselves, as well as with women, about themselves and their culture. That is why I think we need net.men. -- Gordon A.
