[net.women] net.women as support group?

barbaral@tekig1.UUCP (Barbara Lee) (01/24/84)

When net.women first began, I thought it would be sort of a support
group, like net.singles. To me, it has become a discussion group
which is very boring to me. Not because the issues themselves don't
interest me, but because there is so much discussion over an issue,
that I get sick and tired of it (i.e. discussions on abortion, prisons,
circumcision, etc.) The reason I do not post very much is not because
I am intimidated by men. If I see that someone has already posted a
view similar to my own, I don't post it to the net. Some of the
discussions become so lengthy and "overdone" that I periodically
unsubscribe to this newsgroup for a while.
I get my support from both men and women in my local area, both
at work and outside of work.
To me, this newsgroup tends to have an aire of "flaming", whereas
some of the other groups such as net.auto, and net.travel have an
aire of helping and information exchange. (I fully expect to get
flamed for this.) Flaming isn't necessarily bad, though I had hoped
this newsgroup would be used more for information exchange and helping
one another. I think the latter is more positive, constructive, and
would help me more than the former.
