[net.women] Famous Lines Poll and Harassment in the Workplace

sdo@u1100a.UUCP (Scott Orshan) (01/26/84)

To the man who "takes advantage of circumstances" at work by using
famous lines such as:

[Background: Man waiting for woman to finish phone call at work.]

"Very Attractive Lady": "Did you want me?"
houxn!dossamg: "From the moment I first laid eyes on you."

[quotes are from <451@houxn.uucp>]

1) I don't know the specific details of the conversation, so I'll
    address the general case.

2) Work is no place to be using "famous lines" of any kind.
They are often offensive, and make the other person uncomfortable.

3) Unwanted, repeated instances of this sort are called
    Sexual Harassment and are illegal.

4) If the recipient of such a line objects to it, she (or he)
should take prompt corrective action by informing the other
person that such behavior is not acceptable.

5) I am not accusing houxn!dossamg of sexual harassment. If the
two people know each other, this behavior may be fine. The
problem is that this was presented out of context, and others
may decide to act this way at work. It is a serious problem.

6) This discussion has been taking place in net.singles. I have
posted this in net.women as well. If you want to follow this
up with another article, PLEASE CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE.
Net.women is not the place to discuss "famous lines to pick up
    women."
