In defense of this out-of-fashion noun, I note that "the girl next door" sounds all-American and healthy, while "the woman next door" sounds illicit, incestuous, and immoral, don't you think? Of course "the young girl next door" sounds twisted and sick, I admit... C (alert to the nuances) B

To me, "the girl next door" implies the young daughter of the house next door, while "the woman next door" implies her mother. I would be incensed at being referred to as "girl" at this stage in my life, but would be flattered to be called "woman". I *am* a self- supporting adult, after all... "...,I note that...'the woman next door' sounds illicit, incestuous, and immoral, don't you think?" No. In fact, I can't imagine "the woman next door" coming across that way. ("incestuous"? Do you associate all women with your mother?) -- K. M. Wilber iheds!kmw or mvuxs!kw
