[net.women] PENTHOUSE FORUM

I have to agree with Sophie. Anyone who thinks those letters are
real is missing a few pages upstairs. I thought maybe those letters were
real until I read about a guy who got off on "swirlies" (that's right, he
stuck it in the john and flushed it!). Some of these letters probably are
real and if not, I'm sure some people do actually do those things, but
c'mon, we can't really expect to take it seriously as a valid cross-section
of american life!

I suspect a formal linguistic analysis of the letters in Penthouse
Forum would reveal that they were all written by the same person
or persons - when one looks at sentence structure and the other things
which leave the author's "fingerprint" on his creations.

Has anyone ever tried this?

Well, of course there can be endless debate over whether those "Forum"
letters are "real". Personally, I believe that most of them *are* real, in the
sense that they are written by "real" people out there in PENTHOUSE-readership
land (as opposed to being written by PENTHOUSE staff writers). "Forum" provides
these people with the opportunity to write their own porno-book fantasies. I
would even be willing to bet that many of the letters purporting to come from
women are actually written by men whose fantasies involve be seduced by an
aggressive woman (not that *all* are, or that I have any supporting evidence;
just a supposition).
I think what really gets me about the letters, is that so many of them
start off with something like "I used to believe that the `Forum' letters were
all staff written until the following incident happened to me last month..."
I think that most of them are real howlers.
