[net.women] static cling and net.women.only

phil@amd70.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (03/26/84)

My understanding of the purpose of net.women.only was that it was a
place where women could talk about things like static cling without
people butting in and saying how silly it was to be concerned about
such things. Where women wouldn't have to justify WHY they wanted to
talk about something.

I have seen complaints that men weren't allowed to read net.women.only,
which is both false, unenforceable and undetectable. I have also seen
complaints that there is nothing which is of interest to men only so there's
no need for net.women.only. This is true in some sense, everyone has a
mother at the very least.

But consider that if a woman posts in net.woman.only she is consciously
saying she only wants to hear from women on that topic. A man may think
he has something to say and that may even be true, but the poster doesn't
want to hear it. I guess the question is, does a woman have the right to
say this? I certainly think so.
