>From Daniel LaLiberte, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign on self-defense for women: > Here's a good one that helped a friend of mine out of a tight spot: > > SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM > > It builds Chi too. I saw a videotape of a lecture on thwarting rape. The speaker had many success stories for his techniques/philosophy. He specifically recommended against screaming. As that incident in New York where a young woman screamed for some fifteen minutes or so, and no one called the police ("someone else will do it," or "I don't want to get involved") (she was killed), or the New Bedford rape case, where dozens looked on dispassionately, indicate (ah, finally the verb!): Screaming is only good when someone else will help you!! Otherwise, you could very quickly turn into one of the (alas, many) cases where a non-fatal crime (e.g. rape) turned into murder because the assailant vigorously tried to shut the victim up. A scream sets up a race between some would-be rescuer and your attacker, and your attacker will usually be able to hurt you many times over before any rescuer arrives--assuming one does (*sigh*). Of course, you can argue that to risk death resisting is better than being raped. You are entitled to believe so, as that is a philosophical question. However, I know someone who was raped once, and I'm glad as hell she's alive. Lastly, "Chi" or "Ki" is only good if you know what to do with it. Study Aikido for a while--that too might help you out in a tight spot. Good luck, one and all, against the forces of evil! Scott D. Anderson decvax!ittvax!anderson
