[net.women] Fallout from coverage of Big Dan rape trial

peterr@utcsrgv.UUCP (Peter Rowley) (04/19/84)

I heard yesterday, with deep sadness, of a 12 year old Philadelphian boy
who had been taken into some sort of custody after assaulting a 10 year
old girl on a pool table, while other children watched. Yes, they had been
watching the coverage of the infamous rape trial.

Instead of making a show-biz spectacle out of everything, all for the sake
of ratings, I would hope the mass media would exercise more restraint,
in light of this incident. I also hope the girl's parents sue either the
cable co. or the boy's parents (for letting him watch the coverage) into
thr ground.

Just to update those interested, two of the men convicted
in the Big Dan case are going to court today, 4/23/84, to face
deportation back to Portugal.

Living in Massachusetts, I naturally caught an awful lot of news
about the case and ensuing trial, but I had not realized that the media
had spread the "story" across the land.
