[net.women] Language and Sex

The eternal debate on language and sex reminds me about a story.

Before Soviet rule the city of Lvov in the Ukraine was dominated by a
Polish elite. The intellectual language and the language of the
University of Lvov was Polish.

Because Lvov was situated in the Ukraine and the majority of the
population was Ukrainian, the Soviets decreed that Lvov was a Ukrainian
city and that the language of the University must be Ukrainian.

Lenin once stated:

Language is the most important means of communication.

To show their support of the Soviet government, the (Polish) professors in
the linguistics department always began their papers with the official
Ukrainian translation of Lenin's observation. Since Polish and Ukrainian
are related languages, the Ukrainian translation had meaning in Polish:

The tongue is the most important tool in intercourse.
