-------------- I suggested the reading list because there seems to be a lot of confusion about the meaning of words like "sexism", "feminism", "oppression", etc. I have no objection to discussing women's issues with anyone who is willing to take the discussion seriously and who is sincerely interested in learning more about the issues WHETHER OR NOT THEY AGREE WITH ME. I find it difficult to hold such discussions with people who have already made up their minds - it seems like such a waste of time - or with people who have little idea of what they are discussing. Remember that the conventional media have rarely been sympathetic towards the women's movement - antagonistic, belittling, or patronizing, but rarely sympathetic. Perhaps what I should have said is those of you who are interested in learning what the women's movement is all about but who have never read any movement literature might start with these... I would imagine that Brownmiller's comment (about men being irritable 365 days of the year) was meant to be at least a little bit humorous (oh dear, I forgot feminists don't have a sense of humor...) and was probably made in response to the belief that a woman's moods can be explained according to the time of the month (please, no flames about PMS). Now Jeff knows how it feels to be the butt of that sort of comment :-). I forgot to sign the "reading list" article. My apologies. Sherry Marts decvax!duke!phs!sam
