That we should expect mechanical reliability from machines is
reasonable, but that we should expect it from one another is not
only mistaken but terrifying in its consequences. Yet the more we
interact with our computers, our answering machines, our television
wristwatches, our stereo headphones, microwave ovens, automatic
garage door openers, vibrators, cuisinarts, dustbusters, and
programmable vacuum cleaners, the more likely it is that I will
