[net.women] Network Etiquette

joy@mit-vax.UUCP (Joy Hoppe) (07/19/84)

[One for the Line-Eater Beast....]

All right, kiddies. This has gone far enough. I'm patient, and fairly
tolerant. (I am SURE I'll be flamed at for *that* remark.... :->)
But the kind of conduct I've read lately is against the rules
of network etiquette. Let me refresh your memories.....

> my comments: not to generalize, but....

"Emily Post for Usenet" (from mit-vax, not me!)

1. Put all items in an appropriate group.
> Several people insist on sticking net.religion stuff on net.singles.

2. Reply via mail.
> A lot of the "followups" are too triv to be articles-- send mail instead.

3. Exhibit care in preparing items.
> A little care will help to eliminate some of the problems herewithin.

4. Read followups.
> NO PROBLEM HERE.

5. Don't be rude or abusive.
> Trish and many others have been quite rude lately. There are other ways to
express anger without cursing (though cursors are a necessity :->).

6. Avoid sarcasm and facetious remarks.
> See #5-- it's hard to tell what's sarcasm/funning unless :-)'s are there.

7. Use descriptive titles.
> NO PROBLEM HERE.

8. Cite references.
> NO PROBLEM HERE EITHER.

A. Summarize the original item in followups.
> Only a few of you do this. It's necessary for a lot of us whose hardware
flakes up occasionally, destroying original articles....

B. In posting summaries of replies, summarize.
> See #A.

C. Be as brief as possible.
> Sorry to bend this rule by adding my comments. :-(

D. Don't submit items berating violators of these rules.
> I suppose I may be breaking this rule now. But I don't think I have
      berated anyone......

E. Don't make people read the same thing more than once.
> Sorry, but I find the "me too" articles are ever so slightly boring and
feel they add very little to the discussions. PLEASE use mail.

PS- The opinions are mine; not the rules.

PPS- Sorry to generalize. I know what a bugaboo
that is to many here. However, there is
significant evidence to support my generalizations.

The rules ARE mine (I DID write the ettiquette doc...) and I agree with Joy...

(mail flames to me as well while you're at it, I guess)
