I think I must agree with Mr. Driscoll about the prevalance of the attitudes (or more particularily, the lack thereof) that Trish believes men hold, if only for philosophical reasons. What Trish seems to have claimed in her 14 point diatribe (Is that a scream I hear? :-) is that 99.9% of all men are mindless animals. Since there is obviously a pretty even margin of females who accept/marry/associate with this 99.9%, it thus condemns 99.9% of females as mindless victims. I for one do not believe that 99.9% of mankind completely turn off their mind as far as relationships between the sexes go. (Anyone who claims that one can use their mind with respect to relationships and still either hold *or accept* such attitudes as Trish described is going to get royally flamed.) When 99.9% of (hu)mankind completely turn off their minds as far as ALL THINGS go, why should relationships be an exception... [BAAAAAA! Well, first off, fuzzy thinkers abound, in all sexes. It is possible for a woman to think unkind thoughts of men and then go off and marry one. Because, consider: a husband is protection - a married woman has some sort of status - the wedding band can be enough to prevent unwanted attention from strange men. And then, one can hope or believe or discover that the man one is intimate with does not whole-heartedly (or at all) subscribe to the tough man image, but this doesn't necessarily dispell the vision that most of the rest of men try to follow the image. Regarding men as dangerous can serve a protective function, at least when applied to interactions with strangers. Yes, it will restrict one's life. Yes, it may not be possible for some to reconcile the bad image with the knowledge that one has of good, solid friends. But then, let's all remember those times when even we enlightened ones decided to be safe rather than smart, the times when we decided to stay secure and hidden rather than learn something new. Recognition of the actions of our own defenses may help to see the effects or utility of other's defenses.
