Does anybody else get riled by this recurring situation: some male posts to net.singles about how he how he just got dumped for an asshole, and then asks, sometimes rhetorically, if all women are only attracted to assholes. I realize that most often the poor person is just inexperienced, or too angry to view his situation objectively; but, frankly, frequently--especially when the individual goes into detail about how women can't see a good thing when he's in front of them, or there are heavy insinuations about now women must deserve all the trouble they get--I just want to box his ears. Or, rather, box ears in net-fashion: flame at length. Like deserves like. Maybe it has to do with the bandwidth of the net, but I get griped at what I see to be entrenched egoism combined with the constricting and everpresent and FALSE stereotype of women craving pain. My sense of humor (or justice, I forget) dictates that the appropriate response is indeed to demonstrate no soothing, nurturing nature. Tact or project deadlines usually prevent me from going wild (other times, failing mailers have proved useful). My anger reflects no germ of truth in the stereotype--it is instead something that has grown as I've aged and seen that ignoring damaging falsehoods doesn't insulate one from them, nor banish them...and tactfully refraining from noticing stupidity doesn't make it go away...
