[net.women] "Jenny of The Prairie"

hollis@ucf-cs.UUCP (Ken Hollis) (12/09/84)

[oh where oh where has my little bug gone....]

Hello...

I found the article about "Jenny of The Prairie" interesting because
of two points. The first one is that it (for once) fairly accurately
described the game as it is with a few minor varying points. You might
ask how I know this, and this brings me to my second point, I was the
programmer for it.

About the only thing that I can see from the article is the fact (as
I remember it) that you can kill the snake, but that is a minor squabble
at best. Also the game does not give the "special end" unless you are
above the first level. I also saw in "Family Computing" an ad for the
software, and Addison Wesley was at the bottom, which I take to mean
that Addison Wesly now owns Rhiannon, or helps to sell it.

Last time I heard, "Jenny of The Prairie" and "Cave Girl Clair" were
completely produced, and "Chelse of The South Sea Islands" was almost
completed. I can check and see if you wish to know more.

Wait......How can this be???? A male programmed this game....but that
MUST be impossible.....The original poster is probably right now
changing her opinion of the game....anything that comes from a male
(at least from what I've seen of her other postings!) must by
definition be sexist and bad.....

Pity.....Now she won't be able to play it anymore...and she certainly
must be sorry for praising a "male" product.

I wonder about the sex split of these video games--boys shoot things, girls
adapt to an environment. What's wrong, can boys only handle shooting? :-)
I wonder: are boys reluctant to play as "Jennie"? Could video game appeal be
slightly improved by being able to toggle sex, so instead of a leather
loinclothed warrior we could have a leather skirted warrior, and also a choice
of "Jennie" or "Jimmy" (I guess "Claire" is ambiguous?)? Also, could girls have
a chance to rescue a helpless boy?

Oh, come now. I never claimed ALL males are bad, only that there are some
severe problems with the bad side of some males. I honestly don't hate males,
and in fact have more male friends than female. Just because I got carried
away really putting down those who rape and dominate, doesn't mean I've
written-off half the race. Again, I see I need to state that I always
judge individuals as individuals, but that when it comes to stereotypes,
(especially those encompassing half the race) one has to realize that
the larger the percentage of the population included in a stereotype, the
more exceptions to the rule of the stereotype must be expected. Indeed,
women too have their bad side, and so do men their good side. I only
addressed one combination of factors. I'm sorry my wording was so poor
that there was so much misunderstanding. If we could only all love
each other and all cooperate...

"Jenny of The Prairie" is a game that originated as an introduction of
computers to girls. It is not a complete simulation, ie there are no
poisonous foods, you cannot kill the fox no matter how you try, and Jenny
only dies if she is attacked by a large animal (Coyote, Mountain Lion, or
Snake) or if she hasn't gathered enough supplies to last through the winter
when the last snowfall comes. There is, however, more than enough different
assorted foods so that she will not be forced to kill anything if she choses
not to.

Who are you directing that towards when you posted that? The original person
who posted the article or the game? I ask this in relation to the second
posting you made...

While it is true I programmed it, I may not have made clear enough in
previous articles that I was hired by RHIANNON to program it for them.
They, the original co-founders Elizabeth Stott and Lucy Ewell, had the
original idea for the game but did not have the experience with
Apple ][ programming to do it. I was contracted to program it, suggested
suitable software packages that would make programming it easier, and I
programmed that one for them. A friend of mine, Helen O'Boyle did
"Cave Girl Clair" for them, and I believe that Lucy Ewell was the one
for "Chelsea of the South Sea Islands".

That was for background purposes. As soon as the original poster saw
my posting, she sent me mail asking about it and congratulating me for
working on it. I would not say that that is someone who has changed her
opinion. Sorry to destroy your images Ross, but maybe *she* isn't the one
who is sexist???

I will be leaving town for a week or so, but if anyone would like a copy
of the instructions, just write and ask:

I have finished my contractual obligations with RHIANNON, and am not getting
paid for any advertisement, but I do think that this game is enjoyable to
play, and has gotten pretty good reviews from what I read.

Mr. Hollis, you have not destoyed any images. My main point is that I
think that certain postings within this group seem to take men to task
for each and every woe that has befallen this planet and the persons
living thereon.

I think that attitude stinks! Certainly there are a number of persons out
there that are sexist. Some are men, some are women. The person who
posted the initial information for this game has often posted items that
were considered by me to be extremely sexist. Sexism is sexism, regardless
of whether it comes in the male flavour or the female flavour. It still
stinks.

But what stinks more is the hypocrisy of many of our more militant feminists
who think that making sexist comments regarding the attitudes that THEY
have "perceived" will rectify the situation. The only thing that it does
is probably piss off more people that are sitting on the fence. I'm
not a fence sitter --- I actively work for women's rights in a variety
of different capacities.

And I think that if you review any and all of my postings in this group
you'll find that I haven't been sexist (okay, a little bit too sarcastic,
maybe....) in any of them. I am for equality. Not this attitude of
knocking men continuously in the hope that the world will see how much
better the world would be without "men" and putting women in their stead.

As for your game, I can certainly appreciate your attitudes regarding
one of your creations. However, my micro-flame had nothing to do with
you, or the game. It merely was me expressing my aggravation towards
someone that, I felt, posted something merely for its "aren't women really
cool, aren't men just the pits" attitude.

I apologize for any personal injury that you might have felt.
