[net.women] Fidelity

sunny@sun.uucp (Sunny Kirsten) (12/17/84)

On Dec. 8th, 1984, my mate and I exchanged vows of fidelity, and we became wed.
Today my mate gave me this gem from D.H.Lawrence:

Fidelity and love are two different things, like a flower and a gem.
And love, like a flower, will fade, will change into something else
or it would not be flowery.

O flowers they fade because they are moving swiftly; a little torrent of life
leaps up to the summit of the stem, gleams, turns over round the bend
of the parabola of curved flight,
sinks, and is gone, like a comet curving into the invisible.

O flowers they are all the time travelling
like comets, and they come into our ken
for a day, for two days, and withdraw, slowly vanish again.

And we, we must take them on the wing, and let them go.
Embalmed flowers are not flowers, immortelles are not flowers;
flowers are just a motion, a swift motion, a coloured gesture;
that is their loveliness. And that is love.

But a gem is different. It lasts so much longer than we do
so much much much longer
that it seems to last forever.
Yet we know it is flowing away
as flowers are, and we are, only slower.
The wonderful slow flowing of the sapphire!

All flows, and every flow is related to every other flow.
Flowers and sapphires and us, diversely streaming.

In the old days, when sapphires were breathed upon and brought forth
during the wild orgasms of chaos
time was much slower, when the rocks came forth.
It took aeons to make a sapphire, aeons for it to pass away.

And a flower it takes a summer.

And man and woman are like the earth, that brings forth flowers
in summer, and love, but underneath is rock.
Older than flowers, older than ferns, older than foraminiferae
older than plasm altogether is the soul of a man underneath.

And when, throughout all the wild orgasms of love
slowly a gem forms, in the ancient, once-more-molten rocks
of two human hearts, two ancient rocks, a man's heart and a woman's,
that is the crystal of peace, the slow hard jewel of trust,
the sapphire of fidelity.
The gem of mutual peace emerging from the wild chaos of love.

Today I faced my hairy beast, and told him to back down.
I vowed I would kill myself, if ever he regained control.
My hairy beast is the dominant animal, the dark side of man.
I took back control of my life from him, who rampaged for so long.

I am a man, like so many others. Some died long ago, and
only live as hollow shells. These are the wimps in life, we all
know one or two. Some never tame their beast, and have no control.
These are the dominant macho assholes, we all know three or four.

I've been battling mine, for 34 years. He cost me a wife, a lover,
and nearly my current mate. He's made me many enemies, as so
many of us do. He's the hairy beast in man. EVERY man has one.
My wife of a week, almost left me, rather than face him again.

I faced him down, and made a pact, with death this time.
If ever he gains control again, I'll kill him, stone dead.
If mankind does not do this, we all will end up dead.
Nuclear power is like a man. Tame it and it will warm you,
Let it loose and it will destroy ALL.

All you men out there, here me. Is dominating any one, any country,
worth destroying the whole planet? I am a man, like you.
I know whereof I speak. The beast in me and the beast in you,
must be stopped cold dead. For if we let him rage unchecked,
there will be no life left, on this beautiful planet.

How can you go on building bombs, when it's the sapphire of fidelity
that you really want, not dominance, of one, of all, of life.
Out of insecurity we try to dominate, and we wage war on one another.
When all we really wanted, was the gem of fidelity.

Lay down your arms and end the wars before it is too late.
We only have ONE planet, the most beautiful of all.
I damn you to burn in the eternal lake of fire,
Every one of you, who contributes in any way to destroying this planet.
God gave it to us to care for, not to nuke into oblivion.
God gave us each other, to care for and love. To anyone who'll take it,
I give my open arms. Be you man woman or child, I give my loving grace.
Unless you destroy our home. The only planet we have. Then say I, may
God damn you to eternally burn. For you failed to tame your beast.
It's a lifelong struggle, to stop that hairy beast. But he lives in
EACH and EVERY man alive. He who seeks to dominate is the hairy beast.
If you've got yours under control, then please before it's too late,
help each and every one you know, to keep theirs in control. If you
haven't faced yours yet, then you might be out of control. I know I was,
for far too long.

As the annual rememberance of Christ is upon us, no matter who your God,
you have to know I speak the truth, as He did so long ago. The truth is
simple: Love your brethren, every sex, religion and race. They are ALL
your brothers, each and every one. And when you seek to put another down,
and put the blame on him, you are avoiding facing your hair beast. For
all the hatred in the world, comes from him alone. So if you think you're
better, or ought to be in control, then look inside yourself, see your
hairy beast. For he is the one to blame, not ANY ONE else.

Today I faced my hairy beast, and told him I had control.
I vowed to my mother's ashes, I would keep him there. For
the next time I fail, I shall strike me dead. A pact with death, with
the devil himself. Only that will keep him in control.

I tried to avoid him, for so many years. I faced the man in me.
And he was UGLY. For he is the face of death, the hairy beast,
who rages out of control. I slew the dragon we all have to face,
and now I claim my bride. She can trust in me, and give me the gem
of fidelity, the sapphire we all seek. But only because I faced and slew,
the hairy beast in me.

I give you ALL, my loving hugs, and warmth of my heart.
I beg you all to hear this story, so many times been told.
By men of fame, and men of history. But it's always the same.
The white knight on his horse, cannot have his bride, til he faces,
the hairy beast inside.

For all you women, who hear this story. Know and understand this:
The hair beast is too big to face by any man alone. Yet he must do it,
if he is to live. And he needs you there, by his side, if ever he can do it,
for the two must do it together, or it cannot be done. It takes great courage,
by both man and woman, but together they can stop, and only they together,
the hairy beast who roams the realm, of every kingdom known.

So, the hairy beast is the desire to dominate, and it lives in EACH and
EVERY man. And if you let a man loose, it will destroy ALL.

I guess there's no point in hoping you meant *some* men since you capitalized
EACH and EVERY. I guess there's also no point in assuring you that you're
wrong, but I will anyway: No, ALL men don't desire to dominate. Men are
not really that much different from women in some ways. If you prick us,
do we not bleed?

It seems as though you see men as inherantly evil creatures, some of which,
with a lot of luck and the right training, can stifle their basically evil
natures and become civilized beings. Please stop hating us all for the actions
of some of us.

I'm sorry, Sunny, if some men rape, and some men beat their wives, and some
men do all kinds of nasty terrible things. But those of us who don't do
those things don't like being told that we're basically the same as those
who do.

Offended.
