[net.women] non-gendered pronouns

barryg@sdcrdcf.UUCP (Barry Gold) (01/07/85)

Science fiction fans have been using hesh (or heesh), hiser, and himer
for some time now with a fair degree of success. Alternatively
I konw one (unpublished) sf writer who uses "a" (pronounced /ah/) as
an all-purpose pronoun for ANY gender (useful in a setting in which
there may be more than two.

While I'm on the subject, don't forget the Poul Anderson novel in which
Vwi was used as the pronoun for God.

Several times I have seen (from another room) a girl come into a room
full of just girls and say "hey guys, lets ... !"

Or just "folks" sounds ok too. I assume that the singular form would be
equally acceptable?
