*** REPLACEMENTS THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE ** [excuse me while I whine for a paragraph or two] I'm sort of tired of reading about long and windy pieces and AOR, so I've decided to do a posting concerning music of greater personal interest. I'm not a believer in net.music.fragmented -- although if some of you less interresting types would care to leave... I just wish there were more things on the order of the few recent SST tour and Residents postings. [now back to our story] The last time I was in the local record store, I noticed a tape by the Replacements called _The_Shit_Hits_The_Fans_, on TwinTone, their old label (supposedly they've signed with Sire). As usual, I was short on money (the tape was priced at $5.50, I think). This turned out to be fortunate, though, because when I returned to campus, it turned out that my roommate had purchased a copy. The tape is of a live performance last November. According to the notes on the package, one of the fans at the show was taping it on his box, and at the end of the night, the Placemat's road manager took the tape away from the kid. The band had it reproduced and is selling it. I don't know if the story is true, but the sound quality suggests that it might be. There's not much crowd noise, but there are some annoying clicks on side one. The songs are maily covers -- the only originals that I remember are _I_Will_Dare_ and _Sixteen_. The covers include _I'll_Be_There_ by the Jackson 5, Iron Man, _I_Will_Follow by U2, X's _More_Fun_in_The_New_World, and about 15 seconds of the Beatles' _Let_it_Be, and in the words of K-tel, many many more. If you've ever seen a live show by the Replacements, it was probably like this tape. They are drunk, rowdy, and sometimes incoherent. This tape and its liner notes are funny, but the joke may run thin after multiple listenings. This tape is _NOT_ a substitute for _Let_It_Be_, which was an album with narry a wrong move. If you're a big fan, especially one who's never seen the Placemats live, you'll probably want this tape. But be warned, the title is accurate. Your new item of apparel will be a real conversation piece. Mine have been greeted with surprise and admiration. "This is the Minneapolis Police... The party is over..."
