[net.women] The censorship of "Pretty Baby"

brad@looking.UUCP (Brad Templeton) (01/28/85)

I can shed some light on this, for (I'm NOT proud to say) it was my
own father who was hired by the censor board to help make the decision
on this film.

He made his decision based on the fact that Shields (the actress) actually
was a young child and thus the production of the film was illegal sexual
exploitation of a chile, despite the presence of permission from her and
her mother. Thus it was decided that the producers should not be allowed
to profit from their film here in this province. It wasn't the nudity or
the subject, it was the sexual use of a child.

I've argued back and forth with him about this myself, so don't flame at me.
Normally he's quite a strong free-speech advocate...
