[net.women] Why I object to Anti-Pornographers

mauney@ncsu.UUCP (Jon Mauney) (02/16/85)

The main reason I speak out in favor of pornography
(besides being "a market they can't glut") is that I
strongly object to the way some people play fast and
loose with the definition of the word. Some people
complain that pornography adversely affect the status
of women in our society, and they adjust their definition
of pornography to fit this thesis. Thus pornography is
restricted to depictions of (sexual) violence and cruelty
to women. Such a definition is consistent with these
(very angry) statements by C. E. Jackson:

> I think that, once clearly examined, the ideas
> contained in pornography will be shown to be as false, as
> cruel & as hate-filled as those that supported American slavery.

> In pornography, the way to express love is often to behave cruelly.

> pictures of a woman going through a meatgrinder

> then look at men who claim films glorifying rape are just
> "harmless fantasies,"

> I want to know how they reconcile their supposed
> belief in sexual "freedom" with orgasms over victimized, bound, gagged
> and/or mutilated women.

There are lots of people who like pornography (in its common meaning)
who do not like the kinds of things just described. The issue is
further confused by equating Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, and sex movies
as all promoting the same ideas. This is patent falsehood. I once
had the misfortune of seeing the inside of a Hustler magazine. Amongst
the many objectionable items was a cartoon of a giant mousetrap, baited
with a watermelon and catching a black male; the wire had caught him
across the back, and a large turd was flying out. Not only that, but the
quality of the drawing was very low. Does this tell me anything about
Playboy?

The dirty movies I have seen have had no violence. They may give a distorted
view of sex, how willing people are to ball strangers, how often it should
be done, and where the ejaculate should go, but my impression is that men
like women, think women are beatiful, want to look at women's bodies as
much as possible, want to have sex a lot, and WANT THE WOMEN TO THINK
THE MAN IS WONDERFUL.

If you want to condemn me for watching the Playboy Channel, do it because
the movies are largely stupid, not because they subjugate women.
(they are, but they don't).
