Thanks to all who sent 'answers' to my query on shirt buttons. The general conclusion is that men's button left over right so that 1. the hilt of their sword (handle of pistol,...) doesn't get caught in the overlap (most men being right handed). 2. they can unbotton thier shirt/jacket faster to get to their sword/pistol/dagger faster. Women's button right over left because it is 1. easier for right-handed servants to dress the women 2. easier for MOTOS (why not MOTSS?) to UNdress the women However, there was TOTAL disagreement about which came first. Were all shirts left over right, then women's switched to right over left, or all left over right then men's switched. Answers were split just about down the middle. I would guess the former is closer to the truth. Elizabeth
