Another aspect of Kelly Girls is that because the jobs are temporary, few
receive any benefits, such as health insurance, life insurance, pensions,
etc. This is fine if the Kelly Girl is "connected" to another wage-earner
who has benefits which cover the Kelly Girl worker. However, a growing
number of workers in these part-time positions are the sole wage-earner in
the household. Not only do these temps make less money, but they have fewer
benefits. Some have argued that these part-time positions can lead to
full-time employment and an increase in the wage-earning power of the worker.
For some part-time positions, this may be true but certainly not for all.
This is particularly true if the part-time worker is "disadvantaged" by
ethnic background. Managers for some of these part-time positions also
specifically look for a "placid" workforce; mostly white, suburban women
with families and a "safe" husband, although I have not heard that Kelly
Girls has these requirements.
