> Somebody even wanted (very understandably, under the circumstances) > to lock up somebody for a long time for saying rude things to her. (Jeff Winslow) The way I read it, she merely wanted to hurt him. Too bad she didn't. > Well, people, put your money where your mouth is. It costs a hell > of a lot of money to do all that. Taxes and bond issues for new > prisons get voted down regularly (at least in this part of the > country). What's wrong with this picture? One: Arnie hasn't stolen your clothes, unfortunately. Two: Your suggestion is orthogonal to what I considered the brunt of this discussion: Diminution of violence against women (qua women) by changing people's attitudes (societal and victims') and target toughening (escorts, assertiveness, arms, paranoia). By the time the legal system gets involved it's too late, and someone has been damaged. On one point I'll agree. You're verbally active, Mr. Winslow.-- Oded Feingold {decvax, harvard}!mitvax!oaf MIT AI Lab oaf%oz@mit-mc.ARPA 545 Tech Sq. 617-253-8598 work Cambridge, Mass. 02139 617-371-1796 home

I don't disagree with you; I was merely responding to some people's cries to "lock 'em up for a good long time". What disturbs me is that you present "Your suggestion is orthogonal..." as an answer to "What's wrong with this picture?" Are we only allowed to make points that pass your tests for relevance? the (momentarily) verbally hyperactive, Jeff Winslow
