Actually wife-beating was once upon a time such a Labor that a genuine United States Patent was issued for a "wife-beating machine"! (I once had the number, really, but it's probably lost in the archives now.) Rick Merrill ( I assume it was only used for masochists! )

A British Judge in the late 1940's stated that it was legal for a man to beat his wife "provided he uses a stick not bigger around than his little finger. A Daily Mail cartoonist (Giles) did a cartoon showing long lines of men going into a shop selling sticks and canes and coming out with canes and nasty smiles.
