[net.women] "Regard"ing Harassment

In a previous article, Adrienne Regard hypothesizes...
> Guy[1,2,3]: (Politely) Nice day. Is that a good book?
> Gal: (Also politely) Yes, but I'm not interested in conversation about it.
> Guy[1,2,3]: Well, shit, I just made a comment. Who the hell do you think..

...and concludes:
> She tried to refuse contact as pleasantly as possible, but she got flack...

I disagree that this Gal was being polite or as pleasant as possible.
I think she ASSUMED the guy(s) were going to harass her.
She could have said "yes, it's an ok book." and resumed reading or whatever.
Most guys would pick up on this, and move on.
But this Gal didn't give the guy(s) the CHANCE to be gentlemen.
Her response 'may' have been appropriate if the guy(s) persisted:
"Would you like to talk about it?", or "What's it about?", or "Hey, baby".
I actually think the guy's opening line above was excellent,
giving a 'lady' an opportunity to politely encourage or discourage.

And another thing, "refuse contact" ?!! What kind of an attitude is that?!!!
We're talking about PEOPLE here- fellow human beings. (albeit men (-: )

But isn't that what basically happened in the real incident ? And
the guys didn't go away. In fact, a couple of them were pretty obnoxious.
You're using a nice double-standard here, and once again women are damned
if they do and damned if they don't.
