The thing to keep in mind about professional sports is that an awful lot of money is at stake. While it is uncommon for professional athlete to intentionally injure an opposing player, if the payoff is big enough, it is done. (Remember in North Dallas Forty, Mac Davis tells his linemen to break a defensive players leg if they had to) With so much money to be made via playoffs, championships, etc., the rules are bent, if not blatantly broken. The spirit of the game is forgotten. A wrong call could mean a trip to the Super Bowl, or a long trip home. Morally, it isn't right. But, that's how the game is played. The most successful colleges in sports are the ones constantly in trouble with the NCAA. That's how money is made. Big name schools are the ones who rake in the TV revenue and go to bowl games. Sports make a lot of money for schools.
